Furnace Installations | When to Consider A Furnace Replacement In Calgary?
Keep your old furnace or upgrade with a new Furnace Replacement (2019) | Calgary Edition
This is an age old question.
At what point in your furnaces life do you start considering a furnace replacement instead of a furnace repair?
Now there isn’t an exact time frame or age that may require your furnace to be replaced. It’s just like a car you have had for 5 or 10 years. It may run great, it may not, and be a lemon.
However, there are some great guidelines you can follow along with to know when it may be best to shop around for a new furnace instead of repairing that old Lennox furnace that was installed in 1975.
Here Is A List Of Considerations When Deciding To Repair or Replace Your Furnace Here In Calgary.
- What Warranty Do You Have
- Age Of Your Furnace
- Home Comfort
- Energy Efficiency (Saving On Your Bills)
- Costs Of The Furnace Repair
- Current Rebates Offered By Governments
- The Climate
- Maintenance packages
Why Your Warranty Can Save You From Buying A New Furnace
Most if not all Furnace Companies, including us here at JPS Furnace & Air Conditioning in Calgary, offer an included warranty with the purchase of a new furnace.
Now here is where things become tricky as you may not have purchased the furnace in your home, or maybe you recently bought your home with the existing furnace already there.
So How Do You Know If You Have A Warranty On Your Furnace?
If you are a new home buyer than you can ask your builder what is covered for warranties throughout your home and of course ask specifically about the Furnace and Air Conditioning System.
If you bought a home here in Calgary and surrounding area with an existing furnace that you didn’t purchase, you can simply go look at your furnace and the brand thats on it and give it a call. That can help you decide if there’s a warranty.
Chances are if your home is more than 10 years old the warranty will be expired.
Also understanding that not all warranties are the same.
Standard Warranty Vs Manufacturer’s Warranty On A New Furnace
Parts & Labour warranty
This is exactly what it sounds like, are the parts covered or is the cost of labour to repair the furnace also covered. Be sure to check this when considering a new furnace or repairing your existing furnace.
A Standard Warranty is typically around 5-8 years, this means that the business itself covers any fixes or repairs under their terms. Also meaning you have to trust the company you are buying from will hold up on their end of the deal without fine print that often comes up.
A manufacturer’s warranty is coverage from both the business and the manufacturer on your furnace. This means if the company goes out of business or doesn’t hold up, you can still feel comfortable that the manufacturer will.
Here at JPS Furnace & Air Conditioning, we want to make sure our customers are completely taken care of. We offer a very transparent complete 12 years parts and labour manufacturer warranty. This is the best furnace warranty offered in Calgary

2) Age of your furnace
Here is where things can get confusing for homeowners.
There is often the saying, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”
However, this is technically true, when it comes to your furnace it all about being prepared. If your furnace is 15 years old or older, your chances of a breakdown are dramatically increased.
Now since 15 years is well past most warranties there’s going to be a cost to that repair as well.
Waiting for a breakdown to happen in a Calgary winter is just waiting for a tremendous amount of stress. There’s no way to know exactly when it will break, but it’s bound to happen.
In Calgary, this could be mid-winter, during peak season for HVAC companies, the weather is -40 and maybe you are at work or on vacation, or maybe the middle of the night?
Sounds stressful right? That’s because it is.
It’s a risk you take with any furnace, but significantly more with an older furnace.
We would recommend if your furnace is 20 years or older, considering a new furnace is a great idea or consider preventative furnace maintenance & inspection that can help give you an idea of your furnaces overall health.
3) Your Home Comfort (no more cold spots)
Calgary has dramatic changes in climate. It can go from a warm chinook to -35 overnight it seems. This is tough on a furnace to handle. Dramatic changes in temperature means the furnace has to work hard to evenly spread the heat in your home.
An older, single stage furnace works in an “all on” or “all off” situation. This means the furnace turns on full blast, often loudly, to heat your home until the thermostat says “ hey it’s warm enough in here”
This leaves cold spots in some areas of your home. Newer high efficiency furnaces offer variable speeds. This means it can choose how hard and adjust according to work based on the weather and temperature of your home. It maintains a more consistent temperature and reduces those cold spots in the kids bedrooms.
If you’re older furnace is not maintaining the temperature it may be time to consider getting a free furnace quote.
4) Energy Efficiencies With New Furnaces
This aligns more so with the age of the furnace and how efficient it is.
A very common misunderstanding is looking solely at the price of a new furnace and not considering the energy bills that your old furnace is burning up.
“They don’t make them like they used to”
Is 100% right. They made furnaces to last back in the day. What they didn’t do was make them efficient.
So although the costs of a new furnace can vary, consider the savings on your energy bills that a new furnace has over its lifetime.
Most often if your furnace is older, ie. 20 years or more, you will actually save money by buying a new furnace. This Saves you hundreds of dollars per year on your energy bills over the lifetime of the furnace.
Let’s give an example.
Your Furnace and Air Conditioning makes up for 45% of your home energy bills. Its the biggest portion of your bills.
If your new furnace offers 30% savings in efficiencies and the portion of your bill that is from your heating and cooling is roughly $150. That’s a savings of $45 per month. Roughly of course.
Now take that $45/ month in savings and multiply it by the life of the furnace, Which is 20 years, that’s over $10,000 in the saving of your energy bills. That means your furnace is paid for just in energy efficiency savings.
None of this includes any of the savings that included warranties have that cover the costs of any repairs.
Now you can see what the real value of a new high-efficiency furnace is.
5) What Is The Cost Of Your Furnace Repair in Calgary?
Well, this is a tricky question because the cost of a repair may also include travel fees, diagnostic fees, overtime rates and other things outside of the actual part that is being fixed.
If a repair is going to cost more than $1500-$2000, which is not uncommon, it’s definitely best to look at a new furnace. For a repair that costs roughly ⅓ of a new furnace, you could replace your furnace with a 12-year warranty and included maintenance that JPS Furnace & Air Conditioning offers with all new furnace installations.
If your repair is $1500 or less you may want to consider other factors that we have mentioned above, such as the age and efficiency of your furnace, and other considerations such as how many times have you repaired your furnace. Is this a temporary fix or will there be another repair in the future?
6) New Furnace Rebates Offered by Governments Energy Plans
This includes windows, furnaces, thermostats, insulation products and many more.
Each year this changes slightly and some years are much better than others when it comes to rebates on new furnaces.
Be sure to keep an eye out on furnace rebated that could save you hundreds of dollars.
We have a list of Current Furnace rebates below:
Now this one is pretty self-explanatory here in Calgary and area. Are you confident your furnace can hold up another year? Each year differs so much in temperature and climate it’s hard to predict a mild or extremely cold winter.
Consider how cold it can get here in Calgary and whether you and your home are prepared for a potential breakdown.
8) Maintenance Packages
This may be something you wouldn’t expect but there are preventative measures you can take to prolong the life of your furnace.
Annual furnace maintenance is recommended by many HVAC companies and actually may be a requirement to ensure your furnace warranty. This is the fine print that may often be overlooked.
The average cost of furnace maintenance is around $150 per year.
So if your furnace is getting older maybe look into a tune-up and inspection to get an idea of the current health of the unit.
When buying a new furnace consider the lifetime costs of maintenance to ensure your warranty.
At JPS Furnace & Air Conditioning we take pride in our reputation and our award-winning service. We offer included maintenance with many of our furnace packages to ensure you don’t have to worry in the years to come.
Maintenance can be great for prolonging the life of your furnace but also an affordable option to stay ahead of costly repairs.
When You Should Get A Furnace Replacement Instead Of Furnace Repair?
It’s best to consider the age of your furnace, 20 years or higher is a great time to consider a new furnace unit.
The likelihood of a breakdown increases with older furnaces and can be costly. Anything over $1500-$2000 dollars should be an indicator to look at a furnace replacement.
Older furnaces are also considerably less efficient and can cost you significant amount during cold winters here in Calgary. A furnace replacement may be a bigger cost up front but the overall savings can work in your favour.
Lastly, between government initiatives and overall better high-efficiency furnace systems made today, with warranties and maintenance that can come included, you can rest assured you won’t have to worry for another 12 years about your furnace and your family’s home comfort.
